adhyāsa
अध्यास
Superimposition; the projection of attributes of one thing onto another.
In Vedanta
The mutual superimposition of the Self and the not-Self. Śaṅkara opens the Brahmasūtra-bhāṣya by identifying adhyāsa as the root cause of saṃsāra — mistaking the body-mind for ātmā and ātmā for the body-mind.
