jāgrat
Being awake, watching.
In Vedanta
The waking state — in which the individual (called viśva) experiences the external world through the sense organs and mind. The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad analyzes this as the first quarter (pāda) of ātmā. The waking state is characterized by duality — a subject experiencing objects. Vedānta uses the analysis of the three states to show that ātmā is the invariable witness present in all three.
