In Vedanta
The aspect of the antaḥkaraṇam whose function is saṅkalpa-vikalpa — deliberation, doubt, and emotional response. Manas receives sense data and oscillates between possibilities. It is the seat of desire (kāma) and volition. In Vedānta, the mind is not the self but an instrument — like the eye is an instrument of seeing, the mind is an instrument of thinking, illumined by consciousness (caitanyam).
