mantrah
Vedic mental prayer.
In Vedanta
A sacred formula or verse from the Vedas, used in prayer, ritual, and contemplation. In Vedānta, mantras from the Upaniṣads — especially the mahāvākyas — function as the verbal means of knowledge (śabda-pramāṇam) that reveal the nature of ātmā. The power of a mantra lies not in its sound alone but in the meaning it unfolds when properly taught and contemplated.
