puruṣaḥ
Original source of creation; the Supreme Being; a man.
In Vedanta
In Sāṅkhya, puruṣa is pure consciousness distinct from prakṛti. In Advaita Vedānta, the term refers to ātmā or Brahman — the conscious principle that is the basis of all experience. The Puruṣasūkta describes the entire creation as arising from puruṣa. Unlike in Sāṅkhya, Vedānta does not accept a real duality between puruṣa and prakṛti — they are Brahman and its power.
