The four qualifications that make a person fit (adhikārī) for the pursuit of self-knowledge, as outlined in the Vivekacūḍāmaṇi: (1) viveka — discrimination between the eternal and the non-eternal, (2) vairāgya — dispassion toward the results of action here and hereafter, (3) śamādiṣaṭkasampatti — the six inner disciplines, and (4) mumukṣutvam — an intense desire for liberation. These are not arbitrary prerequisites but natural expressions of maturity.
