Management of the mind.
In Vedanta
Mastery over the mind — the capacity to manage the mind so that it does not run unchecked after objects. Śama is the first of the six inner disciplines (śamādiṣaṭkasampatti). It is not the destruction of thought but the ability to bring the mind back to the teaching and to what is being inquired into. A mind without śama cannot sustain the attention needed for self-inquiry.
