smṛtiḥ
Memory; production of human authors; lawbooks.
In Vedanta
Texts composed by authors based on the Vedas, including the Dharmaśāstras, Itihāsas (Mahābhārata, Rāmāyaṇa), and Purāṇas. Smṛti is a secondary authority — valid only insofar as it is consistent with śruti. Where smṛti contradicts śruti, śruti prevails. Smṛti is valuable in Vedānta for clarifying and elaborating what the Upaniṣads teach.
