turīyam
Fourth, a fourth part, quarter.
In Vedanta
Not a fourth state but the substrate of all three states — the pure consciousness that is ātmā. Called 'turīya' (the fourth) only to distinguish it from waking, dream, and deep sleep, but it is not a state that comes and goes. The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad describes it as: not inward-knowing, not outward-knowing, not both, not a mass of knowing, not knowing, not not-knowing — it is ātmā, to be recognized.
